Cook Islands
Cook Islands is a state in Polynesia (Oceania) that has existed since 1965 CE. The timeline colours it by the language of its rulers: Austronesian (Malay, Javanese, Cham, Tagalog, Malagasy, Polynesian, Maori).
A British protectorate from 1888, brought within New Zealand's boundaries in 1901. A constitution promulgated on 4 August 1965 made it self-governing in free association with New Zealand, and since the start of the 21st century it has run its own foreign and defence policy.
