Republic of Venice
Republic of Venice was a state in Italy (Europe) that lasted from c. 697 to 1797 CE, about 1,100 years. Its people spoke Latin and Romance languages (Latin, Italic, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Romanian).
Ruled by an elected doge from, by tradition, 697, Venice built a trading empire in the Adriatic and Aegean and steered the Fourth Crusade to Constantinople. Napoleon ended it in 1797.
