British protectorate of Brunei

British protectorate of Brunei was a colony in Borneo and the Philippines (Southeast Asia) that lasted from 1888 to 1984 CE, about 96 years. The timeline colours it by the language of its rulers: Germanic (Gothic, Frankish, English, German, Dutch, Norse).

Sultan Hashim signed a protectorate agreement on 17 September 1888 to stop further loss of territory. A 1905 to 1906 treaty installed a British Resident whose advice was binding except on Islam, until the 1959 constitution restored internal rule. Independence came in 1984.
