Iberian Union
Iberian Union was a state in Iberia (Europe) that lasted from 1580 to 1640 CE, about 60 years. Its people spoke Latin and Romance languages (Latin, Italic, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Romanian).
Philip II of Spain claimed Portugal in 1580 after its young king died on campaign in Morocco, joining the two crowns and their empires. A revolt in Lisbon restored Portuguese independence in 1640.
