Tasmanian Aboriginal peoples appears on the timeline as a people or culture of Australia (Oceania) from c. 3200 BCE to the present, a span of more than 5,225 years. Its people spoke Aboriginal Australian languages (Pama-Nyungan and other Australian families).
Cut off from the mainland by rising seas about 10,000 years ago, Tasmanians lived in isolation until British settlement. The Black War of the 1820s and removal to Flinders Island in the 1830s nearly destroyed them, and their descendants survive today.
