- Seven Years' War begins, Europe. Frederick II leads Prussian troops into Saxony on 29 August in a global conflict that sets Britain and Prussia against France and Austria. It spreads to North America and India before ending in 1763.
- Battle of Plassey, South Asia. Robert Clive's East India Company troops defeat the Nawab of Bengal after bribing his commander Mir Jafar, a battle seen as pivotal to colonial control of the subcontinent.
- Third Battle of Panipat, South Asia. Ahmad Shah Durrani destroys the Maratha army north of Delhi in one of the largest battles of the 18th century.

- Rebellion of Tupac Amaru II, South America. The kuraka José Gabriel Condorcanqui leads the largest revolt in the Americas before the wars of independence. He is executed in Cusco in 1781, and by 1783 an estimated 100,000 Indigenous people have died.
